SmartManager software for remote operations with GEODEVICE magnetometers

SmartManager was originally developed for use in INTERMAGNET magnetic observatories as well as in earthquake monitoring and prediction systems. Later, functionality was added to extend its use with base magnetometers for real-time data monitoring, as well as for automatic email notifications about geomagnetic storms or sudden changes in the magnetic field related to unauthorized interference. This capability eventually became the foundation for its use in security systems based on a distributed network of magnetometers. Any of our land-based or marine magnetometers can be permanently installed and connected to the internet using SmartManager.

Operation within INTERMAGNET network or other magnetic observatories

SmartManager provides recording of raw one-second and one-minute files in the IAGA-2002 format. These operational data can later be processed and saved into an IAGA provisional file. When generating one-minute files from one-second data, a 90-second wide Gaussian filter is applied, along with predefined thresholds to exclude low-quality measurements. The data can be automatically processed and sent to a specified email address. Upon user request, data transmission via GOES/METEOSAT satellites can also be configured.

Working with base magnetometers during ground / drone or airborne magnetic surveys

Magnetic surveys should not be conducted during geomagnetic storms. The peak of the current 25th solar cycle, according to NOAA and NASA forecasts, is expected in July 2025. This is the time when solar activity—including sunspots, solar flares, and magnetic storms—reaches its maximum. SmartManager enables remote monitoring of base magnetometer data and automatic detection of magnetic field surges exceeding preset thresholds, sending email alerts with magnetic field charts and recorded data. Instant detection of storm onset helps reduce costs, especially during airborne magnetic surveys.

Security systems

High-sensitivity magnetometers can be effectively used to detect unauthorized intrusions into protected perimeters. All vehicles, and basically all everyday items such as tools, smartphones, and equipment, distort the natural magnetic field and can therefore be detected. The detection range for cars and boats typically spans tens of meters. At the same time, it is nearly impossible to detect a magnetometer, as it is a passive sensor and emits no signals. SmartManager is an efficient solution for creating an integrated magnetometer-based monitoring network.
